From Silence to Song

On Saturday 18th October 2025, Diva Voces will perform Kim André Arnesen’s Magnificat at SETU Chapel, Waterford – once the site of a Magdalene laundry. The concert is presented in partnership with the Waterford Memories Project, which is based at SETU and dedicated to documenting and remembering the history of Ireland’s Magdalene laundries and industrial schools in the South East of Ireland.

This forty-minute work is deeply compassionate, which Arnesen describes as a prayer for the sick and the poor – a song of help and hope for those who struggle. It seeks to capture what a young, poor woman might have felt on hearing news of her pregnancy. With that sentiment in mind, Diva Voces’ performance in Waterford is offered as a gesture of compassion for the many Irish women who could not celebrate their pregnancies but were forced to conceal them in shame, fear, and guilt. By bringing this work to SETU Chapel, we hope to transform a place of sorrow into one filled with positive energy, light, and beauty. This concert will honour and celebrate the lives of all who spent time in Industrial Schools, Magdalene Laundries, and Mother and Baby Institutions.

The 45 minute performance will be accompanied by an eight piece female orchestra & soloist conducted by our Musical Director, Duncan Brickenden.

The concert is free to attend and tickets should be booked here on Eventbrite.
